Why check a quote?

The biggest surprises in a renovation usually aren't overpriced items. They're the things that were never in the quote: work you assumed was included, then got charged for halfway through. A cheaper quote is often cheaper because it covers less.

We check two kinds of quotation: kitchen and countertop quotes, andinterior design and renovation quotes from ID firms, contractors and carpenters. Condo or landed.

What we check

Missing work

Things the job needs but the quote leaves out, like sink and hob cut-outs, waterproofing, debris disposal, making good after hacking or the JMB/MC application.

Vague items

Lines that don't say what material you're getting, how much of it, or what's included.

Items not yet priced

Provisional sums, allowances, "TBC" and "by owner" lines that make a quote look cheaper than the final bill.

Design fee and drawings

For ID quotes: what the design fee covers, such as revisions, drawings and site supervision, and whether it's deducted if you build with the same firm.

Payment and warranty

Deposit size, payment stages, warranty, defect liability period and how extra work is charged.

Questions to ask

A list of questions you can paste straight into WhatsApp to get a clearer, written quote.

Where we have reliable market data, we also compare unit rates with typical ranges. Where we don't, we say so rather than guess.

What you get

A written report (PDF, usually 2–6 pages) within 3 working days of payment for a kitchen check, or 5 working days for an interior design or renovation check. Every finding points to the line in your quote, so you can check it yourself. For example:

Sample finding

Waterproofing isn't mentioned for either bathroom (items 14–22).Both bathrooms are being hacked and retiled, but there's no waterproofing line or warranty. Leaks into the unit below are one of the costliest renovation problems to fix later.

Question to send

"Is waterproofing included for both bathrooms? If so, which membrane, how high up the wall, and how many years of warranty?"

Price

A Single Check covers one quotation; Compare covers two or three quotations for the same job. Launch prices are for our first 20 checks of each kind, in return for honest feedback on the report.

Kitchen cabinets, countertop, cut-outs, backsplash and related plumbing and electrical work.

One missing item, such as a cut-out, waterproofing, debris disposal or a DB box upgrade, can cost more than the check.

How it works

  1. Blank out your personal details. Cover or crop your name, address, unit number, IC number, phone number and signature before sending. We don't need them to check the quote. Keep the contractor's company name and any SSM or CIDB number visible, because we check those.
  2. Click "Request a quote check", fill in the short form and upload your quotation(s) as a PDF or clear photos.
  3. We reply within 1 working day to confirm we can review it, with payment details (DuitNow or bank transfer). If a quote is unreadable or outside what we check, we'll tell you before you pay.
  4. You get your report within 3 or 5 working days of payment, depending on the check.
  5. Send the questions to your contractor and ask for a revised quote in writing.

What it isn't

  • Not a site inspection. We review the documents you send. We can't see your walls, pipes or wiring.
  • Not a quantity survey or legal advice. It's an independent opinion to help you ask better questions.
  • Not a recommendation. We don't tell you which contractor to hire. We tell you which quote is clearest and what to ask.

Independence and your files

  • We don't take commission from the contractors whose quotes we review.
  • We don't sell renovation work or materials, and we'll never use your quote to sell to you.
  • Please blank out your personal details before sending. If any are left in, we remove them before preparing your report.
  • We delete your quotation files 30 days after sending your report. We may keep anonymised prices (job, rate, area) to improve future checks. See our privacy policy.
